CM Himanta Biswa Sarma: Tata Intends To Build a Semiconductor Plant In Assam For Rs 40,000 Crore

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Tata Group intends to invest around Rs 40,000 crore in the establishment of a semiconductor processing plant in Assam.

While addressing a function, the Chief Minister stated that after discussions with the state government, it has contacted the Centre for the final approval and that approval is expected soon.

Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “There is very good news for us. Tata Electronics Ltd has applied to set up an electronic centre at Jagiroad”.

“They have submitted a proposal to the Government of India with an outlay of about Rs 40,000 crore”, Sarma continued.

Jagiroad, in Morigaon district, is around 55 km from Guwahati.

Sarma stated that the Tata Group had preliminary negotiations with the state government about the semiconductor assembly and packaging factory and that they were satisfied with the discussions, therefore they approached the Centre.

Chief Minister went on to say, “If all goes well, we will see a major investment in the state which will create a positive environment for industrialisation. We are in touch with the Centre and hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two”.

According to the chief minister, the conglomerate has also addressed the state government about training 1,000 individuals for jobs at the plant.

“We used to always ask why the electronics and IT industry did not come to our state. Now it is changing”, CM Sarma added.

In August, the state cabinet passed the Assam Semiconductor Manufacturing and Electronic Production Policy.

Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an ‘X’ post for his continuous guidance in transforming the State.
