Centre To Play Important Role In Creating Global 6G Networks Architecture

Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (Telecom), stated that the Centre will play a crucial role in establishing standards and infrastructure for 6G networks worldwide.

Mittal, who inaugurated a 6G centre of excellence at IIT-M Research Park, Chennai, stated that this initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ document, which was launched in March last year.

PM Modi wants India to be a leader in the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

Mittal went on to say that the initiative intends to develop a cohesive and coordinated effort to advance 6G technology, ensuring that all projects benefit from shared experience and resources.

The centre of excellence is a sub-centre of Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE) India, and it will lead the development and deployment of 6G technology, promising unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity.

The centre will act as an innovation hub, bringing together academic and industry specialists to work on cutting-edge projects.

This collaborative environment will encourage the development of innovative applications and services that leverage 6G’s capabilities.

This hub will also permit interconnection with the current 5G Test Bed at IIT Madras which was developed in-house through a collaborative initiative involving eight institutes and sponsored by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

PM Modi launched the 5G Test Bed in May 2022, and industry and academia have since used it extensively to test new 5G technologies and application cases.

The DoT has financed two next-generation testbeds to advance the 6G research.

Under the Bharat 6G Vision, DoT is already evaluating 470 submissions on ‘Accelerated research on 6G Ecosystem’.
