Apple CEO Tim Cook made an unexpected visit to China this week, greeting gamers in the southern city of Chengdu as his company faced falling phone sales in its largest market.
Cook stated in a post late Monday on his account on the Weibo social media platform that he had visited Apple’s Taikoo Li store in Chengdu and met young players of the Honour of Kings game.
The online fighting arena game, published by Chinese tech giant Tencent, is one of the most popular smartphone games in the world.
Mr. Cook wrote, “The energy tonight was off the charts!”
He went on to say, “Honour of Kings started here in Chengdu and is now a global phenomenon on the App Store”.
“The game sets a new bar. It is so popular in China and around the world. You can see that people are so passionate about the game and so excited. It’s great to see”, Mr. Cook continued.
Since establishing a foothold in China in 1993, Apple has evolved to become a major provider of iPhones, laptops, and consumer electronics in the country.
During a March visit to Beijing, Cook stated that his company has a symbiotic relationship with China.
However, Apple has struggled in the country in recent years; last year, sales were hampered by factory production cuts as a result of China’s zero-Covid policy.
The company’s supply chain is also threatened by US export controls on high-tech components.
