Adani Power Unleashes ₹2 Lakh Crore Expansion; Sets 41.87 GW Capacity Target By FY32

Adani Power Ltd has dramatically raised the stakes in India’s energy sector by scaling up its long-term installed capacity target to 41.87 gigawatts by FY32 and committing nearly ₹2 lakh crore in capital expenditure.

The move signals one of the boldest private-sector expansion strategies in India’s thermal power industry. It underscores the group’s intent to anchor the country’s future energy security.

Sources indicate that the revised target represents a sharp jump from the company’s earlier goal of 30.67 GW by FY30. With operational capacity currently at 18.15 GW, Adani Power has already secured a pipeline of 23.72 GW.

The company has locked in land parcels and placed orders for critical equipment, effectively de-risking execution and accelerating timelines.

Adani Power has stepped on the accelerator as India enters a prolonged phase of rising electricity demand driven by rapid industrialisation, urban growth, and higher household consumption.

While renewable energy continues to expand at a pace, policymakers and industry leaders acknowledge that thermal power remains indispensable for baseload supply and grid stability.

Industry projections suggest India’s peak power demand could surge from roughly 250 GW today to about 400 GW by 2031-32 and cross 700 GW by 2047.

Against this backdrop, the government has set an ambitious target of adding 100 GW of new thermal capacity by 2035. Adani Power’s expansion aligns closely with this national priority.

Thermal Push Reshapes Power

In 2025 alone, the company increased its generation capacity from 17,550 MW to 18,150 MW. It achieved this growth through the acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd, which operates a 2×300 MW plant near Nagpur.

During the year, Adani Power also secured competitive power supply contracts in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam, reinforcing its growing footprint across key states.

The company announced a series of large greenfield and ultra-supercritical projects. The company is developing a 1,500 MW plant in Uttar Pradesh with an investment of about $2 billion.

It is building a 2,274 MW project in Bihar worth $3 billion and a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical project in Madhya Pradesh costing ₹21,000 crore.

Adani Power is also setting up a massive 3,200 MW greenfield project in Assam involving an investment of ₹48,000 crore.

Beyond thermal power, Adani Power has entered the hydropower segment through a strategic partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation.

The collaboration focuses on developing the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project. The move signals the company’s diversification into firm and reliable power sources.

Fuel security remains central to the strategy. The company has secured approval to operationalise the Dhirauli captive coal mine in Madhya Pradesh.

The mine holds geological reserves of about 558 million tonnes. It will operate at a peak production capacity of 6.5 million tonnes per annum.

Looking ahead to 2026, Adani Power plans to fast-track construction, ramp up captive mining, deepen hydro partnerships, and deploy greater digitalisation to boost efficiency.

The expansion is expected to generate significant employment and drive large-scale skill development. It will reinforce the company’s economic and political relevance in India’s evolving power landscape.
