Adani Power To Supply 2,400 MW To Bihar Under 25-Year Agreement

In a landmark energy agreement, Adani Power Ltd (APL), India’s largest private sector thermal power producer, has signed a 25-year power supply deal with Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL).

The pact will see APL provide the state with 2,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity, significantly bolstering Bihar’s energy capacity.

Adani Power will generate electricity from a new greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plant it plans to set up in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district.

BSPGCL awarded the project to APL in August, on behalf of the North and South Bihar Power Distribution Companies, after the company quoted the lowest supply rate of ₹6.075 per kWh.

Investment and Employment Opportunities

APL has announced an investment of approximately $3 billion (around ₹25,000 crore) to develop the three-unit (800 MW x 3) power plant and associated infrastructure.

The project will follow the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model.

During its construction phase, the plant will generate between 10,000 and 12,000 direct and indirect jobs. Once operational, it will employ around 3,000 people.

Adani Power has already secured the necessary coal linkage for the project under the Government of India’s SHAKTI (Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India) policy.

This ensures long-term fuel supply for the project, enhancing the viability and stability of power generation.

Greenshoe Success in Madhya Pradesh

In a related development, APL also highlighted its recent success in Madhya Pradesh, where it secured 1,600 MW capacity through an innovative ‘Greenshoe Option’—a first in Indian thermal power tenders.

The award, granted by MP Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL), includes an additional 800 MW capacity over the original allotment.

Both units (800 MW x 2) will be built in Anuppur district, with a commissioning target of 60 months and an investment of ₹21,000 crore.

The project will generate approximately 10,000 jobs during construction and employ 2,000 once operational.

These large-scale projects by Adani Power underline its growing role in meeting India’s energy demands through efficient, large-capacity thermal power generation.

For Bihar, the Pirpainti project is a vital step toward improved power availability, infrastructure development, and economic growth.
