Adani Power Expands Electricity Exports To Bangladesh Despite Strained Bilateral Relations

India’s Adani Power has sharply increased electricity exports to Bangladesh despite deteriorating diplomatic relations and criticism over pricing.

Data from Indian and Bangladeshi government agencies confirm the surge.

Electricity supplies from Adani’s Godda coal-fired power plant in Jharkhand rose nearly 38% year-on-year.

Exports reached about 2.25 billion kilowatt-hours during the three months ending in December.

Adani began supplying power to Bangladesh in early 2023.

The increase lifted India’s share in Bangladesh’s power mix to a record 15.6% for the year.

This marked a sharp rise from 12% in 2024, according to Bangladeshi government data.

The growth comes despite a Bangladesh government-appointed panel describing Adani’s power supply as expensive.

Power trade between the two neighbours continues to expand even as political ties weaken.

India and Bangladesh have suspended visa services. Both sides have also summoned envoys following security concerns at diplomatic missions.

Bangladesh’s rising dependence on imports reflects deepening domestic energy stress.

Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Rezaul Karim said imports are essential to manage shortages.

The country faces acute natural gas constraints, its primary power source. Authorities also expect electricity demand to rise by 6% to 7% in 2026.

To offset gas shortfalls, Bangladesh plans to increase coal imports and expand coal-based generation.

Coal imports jumped 35% in 2025 to a record 17.34 million metric tons, according to data from analytics firm Kpler.

Experts attribute the gas crisis to declining local production and infrastructure bottlenecks.

These issues have restricted the use of liquefied natural gas. As a result, gas-fired power generation collapsed to a record low of 42.6% of the energy mix last year.

A decade earlier, gas supplied nearly two-thirds of total generation.

Adani filled much of the gap in 2025. The company supplied a record 8.63 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Bangladesh.

This accounted for 8.2% of total national supply. Imports from other Indian firms edged up marginally to 7.92 million kilowatt-hours.

In the first 27 days of January, Adani alone contributed about 10% of Bangladesh’s electricity supply.

The figures underline Bangladesh’s growing reliance on Indian power amid energy shortages and geopolitical strain.
