Adani Ports Sets National Benchmark With TNFD Adoption For Nature-Positive Infrastructure

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest port operator, has become the country’s first Integrated Transport Utility to adopt the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework.

The company announced this milestone on Wednesday in Ahmedabad, setting a precedent for other Indian infrastructure enterprises to follow.

By embracing the TNFD framework, APSEZ joins a select group of leading global port operators dedicated to protecting biodiversity and marine ecosystems.

The move further underscores the company’s long-term vision of combining industrial progress with ecological responsibility.

As a TNFD adopter, APSEZ will begin TNFD-aligned reporting from FY26, focusing on the identification, assessment, management, and disclosure of nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities.

The TNFD is a global, science-based initiative co-founded by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Global Canopy.

It provides companies with a structured approach to integrate nature-related issues into financial and strategic decision-making.

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-Time Director and CEO of APSEZ, said, “We firmly believe responsible business practices drive long-term success. Our adoption of the TNFD framework demonstrates our support for nature-related corporate reporting at COP30. We view nature-related issues as a strategic risk management priority.”

He further added, “The TNFD framework offers robust guidance for integrating nature into decision-making and strengthening our contribution to biodiversity conservation.”

A Step Forward in Environmental Stewardship

This development reinforces APSEZ’s leadership in sustainable maritime logistics and its commitment to nature-positive business practices.

However, the company already follows internationally recognised climate risk assessment and disclosure frameworks and continues to raise industry standards in environmental governance.

Adani Ports has undertaken extensive mangrove restoration, having afforested over 4,200 hectares and actively conserved an additional 3,000 hectares, making it the largest private-sector contributor to mangrove ecosystem restoration in India.

With 15 strategically located ports and terminals across India’s west, south, and east coasts and a diversified fleet of 127 vessels, APSEZ also operates as a fully integrated transport utility that connects marine, rail, and logistics networks.

Additionally, the company’s adoption of the TNFD framework forms part of its broader ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy — ensuring that sustainability, transparency, and biodiversity protection remain central to its growth.

Through this pioneering step, Adani Ports strengthens India’s position in the global sustainability landscape, aligning its operations with global environmental standards and reinforcing its role as a responsible steward of nature and economic progress.
