Adani Group Enters Battery Energy Storage With One Of World’s Largest Single-Site Projects

The Adani Group has announced its foray into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with a pioneering 1,126 MW/3,530 MWh project in Khavda, Gujarat.

Scheduled for commissioning by March 2026, the initiative represents India’s largest battery energy storage installation and one of the largest single-location BESS deployments globally.

The project involves the installation of more than 700 advanced BESS containers, reflecting Adani’s vision of enabling India’s transition to clean and dependable power solutions.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasised the importance of this development, stating, “Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future. With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability. This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.”

The company said that the large-scale energy storage facility would enhance grid stability and ensure round-the-clock availability of renewable power, helping India move closer to its net-zero goals.

Supporting India’s Renewable Transition

The Khavda BESS project will serve as a critical link between renewable energy generation and grid reliability.

By storing surplus power generated during off-peak hours, the system will help manage peak load demand, reduce transmission congestion, and mitigate solar curtailment — key challenges facing the renewable sector.

The facility is being integrated with cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology and advanced energy management systems to ensure optimal performance, durability, and operational efficiency.

The strategic BESS deployment at Khavda, part of the world’s largest renewable energy park, will bolster India’s efforts to decarbonise the power sector.

It will enable more consistent energy delivery from solar and wind projects, helping the grid adapt to fluctuating renewable generation patterns.

The Adani Group said the project would play a crucial role in maintaining grid resilience while supporting the government’s ambition to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Following this landmark project, the Adani Group plans to expand its energy storage capacity significantly.

The company has announced plans to deploy an additional 15 GWh of BESS capacity by March 2027 and aims to reach a total of 50 GWh over the next five years.

Through these initiatives, Adani is positioning itself at the forefront of the global clean energy transition, combining large-scale renewable generation with advanced energy storage technologies.

This milestone reinforces India’s leadership in sustainable energy development and underscores Adani Group’s commitment to building a resilient, low-carbon energy future for the nation and beyond.
