Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has achieved a significant environmental milestone by becoming the world’s first renewable energy (RE) Independent Power Producer (IPP) to turn water positive across its entire portfolio, which exceeds 14 GW in capacity.
The company reached this remarkable goal ahead of its target for FY26, setting a new benchmark for sustainability.
AGEL is the only company among the world’s top 10 in terms of operational renewable energy capacity to achieve such an accomplishment.
This achievement was certified by Intertek, a global assurance firm, after thoroughly auditing and assessing AGEL’s water use across 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation initiatives.
AGEL is also the only renewable energy company in India of this size to receive such certification, according to the company.
Being water positive means adopting practices that not only conserve water but also contribute to replenishing water supplies in surrounding areas.
For industries, this entails returning more water to nature than is consumed in operations.
AGEL has implemented a comprehensive strategy focused on water preservation, efficient use, and replenishment.
This achievement is particularly significant because many of AGEL’s solar and wind plants are located in arid and water-scarce regions.
From the dry expanses of Khavda in Gujarat to the arid Thar Desert, AGEL’s efforts have turned these challenging terrains into centres of sustainability, the company highlighted.
To put this achievement into context, AGEL’s water conservation efforts are equivalent to approximately 467 Olympic-sized swimming pools, which would meet the water needs of Lakshadweep for half a year.
Additionally, AGEL’s efforts have revitalised 85 ponds, providing water to over 123,000 people, particularly in water-scarce communities.
Furthermore, over 54% of AGEL’s capacity now uses robotic technology to clean solar modules, saving around 546 million litres of water each year.
AGEL’s journey towards water positivity began with a goal to make over 200 MW of its operational plants water positive, a target it achieved in FY23.
The company then expanded this goal to include its entire operational portfolio by FY26, and it reached this target a full year ahead of schedule.
In a country where water scarcity is a pressing issue, AGEL’s success goes beyond corporate achievement—it marks a revolution in sustainability.
Through innovative water-saving technologies, such as waterless robotic cleaning, rainwater harvesting, and reviving traditional water bodies, AGEL is proving that green energy can be achieved without compromising on precious water resources.
“We don’t just generate green energy. We build it the greenest way possible,” said an AGEL spokesperson. “Climate change will intensify the global water stress and India is among the countries facing the highest level of water security challenges. India has low levels of freshwater available per capita and high levels of utilisation. That’s why this achievement matters.”
AGEL’s entire operational portfolio is now certified as water positive, free of single-use plastics, and zero waste-to-landfill, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable development.
What began as an ambitious environmental goal has now become a national standard, positioning AGEL as a leader in both renewable energy and water conservation.
The company’s success highlights the importance of preserving and optimising water use for a sustainable future.
