Adani Enterprises To Construct Prestigious Sonprayag-Kedarnath Ropeway

Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) has received the Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) for the construction of the landmark ropeway project linking Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.

This ambitious project, with a total investment of ₹4,081 crore, marks AEL’s entry into ropeway infrastructure development and aims to enhance pilgrimage connectivity in the region.

Spanning 12.9 kilometres, the ropeway will reduce the strenuous nine-hour trek to a mere 36 minutes, making the journey to Kedarnath considerably safer and more accessible for the millions of pilgrims visiting annually.

The ropeway’s capacity will allow it to transport 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, serving hundreds of thousands of devotees each year.

Kedarnath attracts around 20 lakh pilgrims annually, underscoring the critical importance of this project to both religious tourism and regional development.

A Public-Private Partnership Initiative

The National Ropeways Development Programme, under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, includes the project, and Adani Enterprises’ Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division will develop and complete it within six years.

Post-construction, AEL will operate the ropeway for 29 years, ensuring its maintenance and smooth functioning.

This long-term engagement is anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities and stimulate the tourism economy of Uttarakhand.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, highlighted the broader vision behind the project, stating, “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering feat – it symbolises a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure. By making this sacred journey safer, faster, and more accessible, we honour the faith of millions while creating new opportunities for Uttarakhand’s people through our partnership with NHLML and the Government of Uttarakhand.”

He further added, “This prestigious project reflects our commitment to building infrastructure that not only serves the nation but also uplifts its people.”

Adani’s Expanding Infrastructure Footprint

Adani Enterprises has been actively investing in emerging infrastructure sectors, contributing to national development by incubating and spinning off specialised listed entities.

Their current strategic focus includes green hydrogen, airport management, data centres, road infrastructure, and primary industries such as copper and petrochemicals—all areas with significant potential for growth and value creation.

The Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway project exemplifies the government’s focus on modernising infrastructure to support sustainable religious tourism.

It promises to enhance the pilgrimage experience, stimulate economic growth, and provide long-lasting benefits to Uttarakhand’s local communities.
