Gone are the days when star players like Arjuna Ranatunga, Aravinda De Silva, Sanath Jayasurya, Asanka Gurusinghe, Roshan Mahanama, Hasan Tillekeratne or for that matter Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Tillekeratne Dilshan and Muttaiah Muralitharan made their marks on the international arena and were indeed considered as Mr Dependables who posed a real threat  to the opposing teams.

So far in the World Cup Sri Lanka has reached the Grand Finale three times. Winning in 1996 while finishing as Runners Up in 2007 and 2011. Now those star players have given way to a bunch of young and talented players  led by  Dasun Shanaka.  Kusal Mendis, Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva will be sharing the batting responsibilities. Whereas Wanindu Hasaranga will play the all-rounders’ role. The team has a promising bowler in the form of Maheesh Theekshana.

One might not take Sri Lanka seriously given their performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup final against the Indians but in Sport anything can happen and every team and players can have their black days and hence he/she would be living in a fool’s paradise as the islanders are quite capable of bouncing back and put up a stellar performance.

The thrilling win against Pakistan on the way to final is a perfect example of that
