ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 : The Aussie Sparkle Doesn’t Seem To Be There Any More

The most successful team in the history of Cricket World Cup, Australia has only a few takers now. The five time champions ( 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015 ) are the only team to lift the coveted trophy in all the five continents. The team is facing bleak future now. Thanks to inconsistency. Apart from being crowned winners, the men from down under were the finalists in 1975 and 1996. They were the semifinalists last time in 2019 whereas in 2011 they were dethroned by India in the quarter finals. 1979, 1983 and 1992 were the cups where they disappointed their fans by putting up poor shows.

Previously none used to take Australia seriously till Allan Border led the team  to triumph in the sub-continent in 1987. After that the men in yellow began to get respects from the cricket pundits.  The golden era started when Steve Waugh’s men clinched the trophy in 1999. After that it was Australia all over. Players like Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, late Andrew Symonds, Michael Bevan, Damien Flemming, late Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath appeared to be more dangerous than fire to the oppositions.

Currently there are players in the form of David Warner, Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc who has the potential of demolishing the oppositions single handedly on their given day but again the question arises, can they deliver ?

In Sport nothing is impossible as in 1987 every cricket lovers kept their fingers crossed upon two teams then defending champions India and Pakistan who were playing firebrand cricket in those days. Even teams like England and West Indies seemed better than the Aussies still Allan Border’s men proved everyone wrong.
