Is India The Boss Of The Global South?

Though the tag of developing nation is still intact, India, however has silently emerged as a global leader. Today the Global South concept depends on India’s mediation as well as guidance with its mantra of Sabka Sath Sabka Vishvaas & Sabka Vikaas.

As a prominent and influential country within the group of advancing nations referred to as the “Global South” India has the central role. Thus the making and maintaining the global platform is the key responsibility upon India’s shoulder.

Though it would not be accurate to say that India is the boss of the entire Global South, but it without any doubt its guiding leader among other prominent nations like America, Britain, Japan and Australia.

Referring to a diverse group of nations from Africa, Asia,  Latin America and Oceania,  “Global South” uniformly shares certain common characteristics, such as historical colonization, financial backwardness or lower levels of economic development as well as the challenges related to inequality and poverty.

Within the Global South overtly there seems to be no single nation holding a dominant or authoritative position over all the others. Though India is guiding the entire journey of its making with its belief of global cooperation and world peace along with a sustainable development keeping everyone’s interests in view.

Practically, leadership roles and influence can vary on the counts of the issue at hand and the specific context. India today is almost the largest and most populous country in the world and in the Global South too. Now in last one decade, the elevation of India to global skies is the envy of many globely.

Thus now, India has a significant say in international political horizon focusing on issues such as economic progress, climate change as well as global governance. India today is seen participating actively in groups like the  G77 (United Nations’s coalition of developing natiojns) and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.)

Keeping in view the fact that the Global South consists of many diverse countries where everyone has its own unique challenges, interests and priorities. In Global South also the decision making process typically goes through collective negotiations and efforts within the group among member countries.

Now look at the other side where we see India. Responsible to play a vital role in the group, India is one among many countries. Therefore, it does have the paramount decision making authority informally within the Global South. And its wise decisions are and will be supported by many dominating nations in the group.

Being an influential and significant member of the Global South, India  informally holds a position of key authority among many prominent countries within the group. Henceforth, the influence and leadership as such is not an issue questioning India’s elevated stature. India is undoubtedly the most influential country within the Global South and what India says is usually agreed upon in spite of the variety of circumstances and issues specific for multiple nations.
