Andhra On High Alert As Severe Cyclone Michaung Nears: Landfall Expected On December 5th Near Bapatla Coast

In many states of South India, scenes of devastation are visible even before the arrival of Cyclone Michong. Even before the arrival of the cyclone, stormy rains have brought floods in many areas. There is devastation in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. But the worst condition is in Tamil Nadu. It is raining heavily in many cities of the state including Chennai, several feet of water is accumulated from the airport to the runway. It is being told that Chennai has received the highest rainfall in 80 years.

So far 8 people have died in Chennai due to continuous torrential rains. On the other hand, teams of SDRF and NDRF have been deployed to deal with this terrible situation. Now the situation is such that people have been advised to stay in their homes. The state government has issued instructions to the administration to provide all possible help to the needy people. An alert has been issued regarding Michong in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Puducherry, due to which the state government is fully alert.

Michong cyclone is going to hit Andhra Pradesh today. The state government is fully alert for this. A few days ago, the Meteorological Department had issued a warning regarding Cyclone Michong in the state, after which the state government started preparing to deal with the situation. According to the Meteorological Department, winds can blow at a speed of 90 to 110 kilometers per hour during this period. There is possibility of heavy rain till December 6 and rain upto 5 inches are predicted in many places. Red alert has been issued in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Cyclone Michong has reached near the coast of Tamil Nadu. Many vehicles submerged and many cars were washed away in water, 3-4 feet water on the highway and water filled on railway track and airport runway. More than 200 trains canceled and 70 flights canceled and many residential areas submerged.

Preparation to deal with ‘Cyclone Michong’

21 teams of NDRF, 14 teams of Disaster Response Force deployed in the affected states, Red alert issued in Tamil Nadu, Orange alert in 5 districts of Odisha, 5000 relief camps and public holiday for two days. In Andhra Pradesh 181 relief camps built in the state, 5 SDRF and 8 additional teams of NDRF teams deployed in Andhra Pradesh

The Word Michong origin

The name Michong given to this cyclone which is causing devastation means strength and flexibility. This is a Myanmar word. According to the World Metrological Organization (WMO), the name Michaung is given by Myanmar and in Myanmar language it is called Migjaum, which means strength and flexibility.

How are cyclones named?

World Meteorological Organization, (WMO) and the member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) suggest names for every cyclone that occurs around the world. 13 countries take turns naming the storm. Once a name is named, it cannot be repeated. Naming of storms in America started in 1953, while the process of naming storms in the Indian Ocean started in the year 2004.These 13 countries are India, Yemen, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Qatar, UAE, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Maldives. Only those storms are named whose speed is at least 63 Kilometers per hour.
