Donald Trump with Volodymyr Zelensky
President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that a victory for Donald Trump in the US election would be difficult for Ukraine, but Ukrainians are prepared.
Trump’s choice of Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate has highlighted how Washington’s stand on Ukraine could change if he wins the election. Vance has stated that he does not care about the situation in Ukraine, but Zelensky believes they must work with the US.
While attending the European Political Community meeting in London, Zelensky said, “Maybe he really doesn’t care, but we have to work with the United States”.
Zelensky went on to say, “Trump’s election would be hard work, but we are hard workers”.
Biden’s administration has provided weapons and supplies throughout the conflict, but the flow was halted by US Congress disputes.
Trump has promised to bring the conflict to an end even before taking office by securing a deal at the negotiating table.
Ukraine is grateful for pledges from its partners to supply F-16 fighter jets, likely this summer, though they have not yet arrived.
Ukraine’s President Zelensky has expressed disappointment that planes have not reached the country for 18 months, stating that they are essential to help resist Russia’s aerial dominance.
He expects no change in Britain’s support for Ukraine but hopes new Prime Minister Keir Starmer will speak about international politics, about defending world security. Ukraine needs powers to turn this leaf.
“Doesn’t just need a new page, we need powers to turn this leaf”, Zelensky added.
