“You Are Indian, You Are Stupid…”: Chinese Singapore Cab Driver Misbehave With Woman Mistaken  To Be Indians

A woman and her daughter were subjected to misbehave by Singaporean Chinese cab driver who mistook their destination and thought the woman was of Indian descent. The incident is currently under investigation. The abuse from the cab driver on Saturday was described by Janelle Hoeden, 46, who is of Eurasian descent: “He said, “You are Indian, you are stupid.” The woman rode in the vehicle with her daughter, age nine.

TADA Cab services

Hoeden captured the heated conversation on her phone as it progressed. Around 2:00 PM on Saturday, she made a ride-hailing reservation on the TADA app. Hoeden claimed that everything went smoothly at first, and she was talking to her child while riding when the driver abruptly became irate because a section of the road was shut since a future MRT line was being built near the Pasir Ris housing area.

Misbehave of Cab Driver started here

“He started shouting at me, saying that I gave him the wrong address and wrong directions,” she said. The driver, a Chinese guy, is seen in the video accusing Hoeden’s daughter of standing at less than 1.35 meters tall. The footage was posted on her Facebook page and an account by a TikTok user, and was then reposted by alternative news site Wake up Singapore.

Hoeden could be heard responding that the youngster was 1.37 meters tall after he continually claimed that her daughter was shorter than 1.35 meters. Then he referred to the girl as “very illegal”. The height is thought to be for the protection of passengers who need child seats.

LTA rules in Singapore

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), all cars in Singapore are required to carry booster seats or child restraints for passengers who are under 1.35 meters in height.

The driver shouted at the woman while driving, “You are India(n), I’m Chinese… You are the very worst kind…” Hoeden corrected the driver, saying: “I am Singapore Eurasian, not Indian.” Eurasians are usually tanned and at times appear to be Indian in appearance.

“As he was verbally abusive, I was afraid that he would start getting physical with me, so I told her to record,” the Singapore broadsheet quoted Hoeden as saying.

Racism not bearable

“Whether I was tanned skin, or Indian, or otherwise, it’s unacceptable what he said – it was totally uncalled for, that he pulled out the race card,” she said. Her child was also shaken after the incident.

Tada Singapore stated that it was looking into the event in comments on ‘Wake Up Singapore’s’ Instagram post highlighting it. “At Tada, we do not tolerate racism, discrimination, or abuse. Our team is investigating this issue. Thanks to everyone who brought this to our attention,” the comment said. She said: “Remarks or comments that insinuate racial differences directly violate Tada community guidelines and are not representative of our company’s values.

“We have launched an internal investigation to fully comprehend the circumstances, and based on our findings, we will take all necessary actions,” the statement reads. She continued by saying that Tada is committed to swiftly and fairly resolving the issue and that it does not, under any circumstances, condone racial insults or remarks.
