Xi Jinping Says ‘Dragon & Elephant Can Dance Together’ In Talks With PM Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday highlighted the importance of strong India-China ties, saying that the ‘dragon and the elephant can dance together’ as the two nations pursue mutual success.

Speaking at the opening of his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin, Xi described India and China as key members of the Global South and underscored their shared responsibility to improve the well-being of their citizens while promoting solidarity among developing countries.

“The world today is swept by once-in-a-century transformations. The international situation is fluid and chaotic,” Xi said. “China and India are ancient civilisations, the world’s two most populous countries, and we shoulder the responsibility of promoting the progress of human society.”

He added that it is essential for both nations to maintain amicable and neighbourly ties, supporting each other’s success and advancing a multipolar world.

Xi also called on India and China to uphold multilateralism, strengthen democracy in international relations, and contribute to peace and prosperity in Asia and globally.

75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Marking the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic ties, Xi emphasised handling bilateral relations with a ‘strategic height and long-term perspective’ to ensure sustained and steady development between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to advancing bilateral relations based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.

He also congratulated Xi on assuming the Chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The two leaders last met at the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. Dialogue had improved after both sides agreed on patrolling protocols along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), easing tensions from a four-year border confrontation.

Both leaders underscored the role of India-China cooperation in contributing to global welfare and regional stability, with Xi highlighting the countries’ historic responsibility to guide international relations responsibly.
