World leaders on Saturday welcomed Hamas’ readiness to release all hostages held in Gaza and engage under the peace proposal outlined by US President Donald Trump.
The move comes after Trump unveiled a 20-point peace plan earlier this week, widely seen as a renewed effort to end the conflict in the region.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Hamas’ acceptance of the US peace plan a significant step forward.
“We strongly support President Trump’s efforts, which have brought us closer to peace than ever before. There is now an opportunity to end the fighting, for the hostages to return home, and for humanitarian aid to reach those who so desperately need it,” he stated.
Starmer urged all parties to implement the agreement promptly, adding that the UK and its partners stand ready to support further negotiations and work toward sustainable peace for Israelis and Palestinians.
French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that Hamas’ commitment must acted upon without delay.
Taking to X, he posted, “The release of all hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza are within reach! Hamas’ commitment must be followed up without delay. We now have the opportunity to make decisive progress towards peace.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the progress under Trump’s plan. He reiterated calls for Hamas to lay down its arms and release all remaining hostages without delay.
Albanese added that Australia will continue to support efforts to end the war and work toward a just and sustainable two-state solution.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Hamas’ announcement as a ‘very welcome step forward’. He emphasised that efforts should now focus on returning hostages, ending the fighting, and ensuring unfettered humanitarian access to Gaza.
Luxon added that New Zealand, along with the international community, embraces the hope this development offers for a future where Israelis and Palestinians live side-by-side in peace and security.
