White House
A mysterious white substance discovered over the weekend at the White House has been confirmed as cocaine.
The powder was discovered by Secret Service personnel on Sunday at about 8:45 pm local time in a publicly accessible area of the West Wing, triggering a brief evacuation of the facility.
President Joe Biden was not in attendance at the time. Instead, he was at Camp David, the presidential retreat, for the weekend. Fire and emergency services arrived to conduct preliminary tests on the substance. Preliminary tests confirmed that the powder was cocaine.
The White House reopened soon after, and the powder was submitted for more testing.
While the Secret Service has stated that an item had been located and tested, it has not yet defined what the material was.
“The item was sent for further evaluation, and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending”, the presidential security agency said in a statement.
The West Wing of the White House is attached to the president’s residence, the executive mansion. The Oval Office, the Cabinet Room, and the Press Room are all located there, as are the offices and workspaces of the resident’s staff members.
Hundreds of people visit or work in the area on a regular basis.
Biden and his family traveled to Camp David on Friday and returned to the White House on Tuesday, where the president was scheduled to speak to a national teachers’ union and host a barbecue to commemorate the United States’ Independence Day.
