Hundreds of yoga aficionados gathered to commemorate International Yoga Day at an event addressed by Sripriya Ranganathan, India’s Deputy Ambassador to the United States.
On Wednesday, prayers and Indian classical dance performances kicked off the International Yoga Day event at the beautiful Wharf, overlooking the Potomac River. Inspired by ancient Indian practice, the yoga class emphasized the idea of oneness and harmony.
Every year on June 21, we commemorate the International Yoga Day. This year’s topic is ‘Yoga for Self and Society’.
Ranganathan stated during the event that yoga lights the path to achieving harmony and balance for a better future for society.
“Recognizing yoga’s international appeal, the United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014”, she explained.
India proposed the draft resolution creating the International Day of Yoga, which was supported by a record-breaking 175 member states.
Yoga has spread widely since its inception in the Indus Valley culture.
Ranganathan claimed that about 5,000 years later, hundreds of millions of people worldwide do yoga.
The event also included aspects to promote the use of millets and environmentally friendly products and activities in daily life.
