Viral video: tearing down posters of Israeli hostages, public defender Victoria Ruiz of New York City resigned

A public defender for New York County resigned from her job a few days after it was captured on camera that she was tearing down posters of Israeli hostages that were all throughout the city. Victoria Ruiz, 36, has departed from the New York County Defender Services, an official informed the New York Post. Hamas has hundreds of individuals in Gaza under captivity.

X was first the site where nonprofit watchdog StopAntisemitism uploaded the now-viral video. The page shared the video and stated, “NYC – New York County public defender Victoria Ruiz caught removing posters of Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas terrorists.” “It is completely intolerable for someone to work in your office at @nyc_defenders with such hatred and bias.”

Victoria works for New York County Defender Services, which released a statement shortly after her video went viral. The Jewish Chronicle reported that the spokesperson stated, “It has come to our attention that one of our attorneys, Victoria Ruiz, recently attended a public vigil solely in her capacity as a private citizen.” We vehemently oppose her acts throughout the occasion, some of which have drew harsh criticism for being extremely disrespectful.

The statement stated, “Ms. Ruiz has apologized to those who were hurt or confused by her actions.” Following an internal assessment and a commitment to improve, we acknowledge this apology and will now vigorously pursue our objective of securing justice and dignity for each and every person we represent.

A petition calling for Victoria’s termination from the company was started after the video went viral. “This action not only belittles those who are enduring hardship, but it also casts doubt on her capacity to offer impartial legal assistance,” stated Chava Rose’s change.org petition. “A defender must be neutral and show respect for every person, no matter what their circumstances or history may be. Through her outwardly biased actions, Ms. Ruiz has demonstrated that she might not be able to carry out her responsibilities impartially and successfully.
