Vietnam’s Leaders Express Condolences To India Over Boat Accident

Vietnam’s top leadership has expressed its deepest sympathies to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a tragic tourist boat accident claimed the lives of 15 Indian citizens.

The messages also conveyed solidarity with the grieving families and the people of India.

The accident took place on Saturday when a tourist speedboat carrying 32 Indian visitors, a Vietnamese tour guide, and three crew members overturned in rough seas near An Giang Province.

Nineteen people survived the incident, while two Indian nationals continue to receive critical care in hospital.

Vietnam News reported that President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung assured the Indian leadership that rescue teams were deployed immediately after the accident. They have also initiated a formal investigation to establish the circumstances behind the accident.

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung separately conveyed his condolences to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar over the loss of lives.

At the same time, Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Phu Quoc Special Zone, confirmed that the boat owner will provide US$1,000 to the family of each deceased victim and US$500 to every injured passenger.

Officials also announced that the authorities in An Giang Province and the Phu Quoc Special Zone will extend financial assistance of approximately US$1,000 for every person who died, along with additional relief as permitted under local regulations.

Police personnel, healthcare teams and other government agencies are working to identify the victims, complete legal procedures and finalise the investigation.

Officials are also coordinating with Indian diplomatic representatives and the victims’ families to arrange the repatriation of the deceased or provide alternative assistance in line with the families’ preferences.
