US President Donald Trump has said the United States is far ahead of China in artificial intelligence, highlighting AI as a key area of competition between the two countries.
Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said Washington was leading in AI and other emerging technologies.
Trump said China ranks second in AI but warned against underestimating Beijing. He said AI could be discussed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s September 24 US visit.
Trump called for regulation that supports AI growth. He said the technology could create jobs, drive medical innovation and boost local economies through new AI facilities and data centres.
The US President further said his administration was helping technology companies establish their own power-generation facilities through faster approvals.
According to him, the move would support the rapidly growing electricity needs of AI infrastructure while easing pressure on the country’s ageing power grid. He said some facilities could supply excess electricity to the wider grid.
The White House meeting brought together senior officials and executives from the technology, cryptocurrency and financial sectors ahead of the first meeting of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Innovation Advisory Committee.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig described computing capacity as a strategic resource in the global AI race and said the US must dominate these markets.
Trump urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, with a vote expected on September 15.
The US and China are competing for leadership in AI, with advanced semiconductors, computing infrastructure, energy supplies and specialised talent emerging as critical areas.
Washington has imposed export controls restricting China’s access to certain advanced chips and semiconductor manufacturing technologies.
