US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will provide weapons to Ukraine through NATO, while warning Russia to enforce a ceasefire within 50 days or face severe tariffs.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office, President Trump confirmed an agreement with the alliance to supply arms to Ukraine, according to Xinhua news agency.
“We are going to be sending them weapons and they’re going to be paying for them,” the US President stated, noting that the US would manufacture the weapons.
Commenting on Russia, he added, “We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days.”
President Trump also mentioned the possibility of ‘secondary tariffs’ of around 100 per cent, as reported by several media outlets.
As per The Washington Times, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later clarified that President Trump used the term ‘secondary tariffs’ to mean economic sanctions.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, President Trump said the NATO agreement was finalised and fully approved, ‘The New York Times’ reported.
“We’ll send them a lot of weapons of all kinds,” the US President asserted. “And they’re going to deliver those weapons immediately to the site, to the site of the war, different sites of the war, and they’re going to pay for 100 per cent of them.”
According to ‘ABC News’, President Trump also confirmed that some Patriot air defence systems would soon arrive in Ukraine.
He further noted that European nations currently in possession of Patriots would be transferring them, and that their arrival was imminent.
