In a stark warning just days before the US presidential election, officials sounded the alarm over foreign interference after a sophisticated, AI-generated fake video surfaced, targeting Vice President Kamala Harris and raising new concerns over election integrity.
According to US intelligence agencies, Iran, Russia, and China have all ramped up efforts to influence American politics. Iran is reportedly backing Harris, while Russia supports former President Donald Trump, and China is focusing its efforts on congressional races.
In a joint statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) revealed that Moscow allegedly “manufactured a video falsely accusing an individual associated with the Democratic presidential ticket of taking a bribe from a US entertainer.” Although the statement did not specify individuals involved, ABC News reported that the FBI has identified one of the figures in the doctored video as Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband, a lawyer specializing in entertainment law.

“This Russian activity is part of Moscow’s broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the US election and stoke divisions among Americans,” the agencies stated.
The ODNI disclosed that “Russian influence actors” had previously targeted Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, producing and amplifying false content accusing him of “illegal activity” during his early career.
In examining the manipulated video, intelligence analysts identified “several indicators of manipulation consistent with influence efforts and tactics used by Russian actors,” according to the ODNI.
Officials have cautioned that these foreign meddling efforts could persist beyond Election Day, deepening skepticism about the election’s legitimacy. In a recent briefing, an ODNI official noted that “foreign actors will likely continue using similar tactics in a contested post-election atmosphere to undermine trust in the integrity of the election process and further inflame divisions among Americans.”
One of the most aggressive examples of foreign interference involved alleged Iranian hacking of Trump’s campaign, with some of the stolen material leaked to media outlets and Democratic Party affiliates. While most media sources declined to publish the content, a Democratic-aligned Political Action Committee, American Muckrakers, recently posted selected documents from the hacked Trump campaign on its website, including research on potential vice-presidential picks and notes from Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. American Muckrakers declined to comment on the source of the leaked documents.
Cuba has also joined Russia and China in attempting to influence races for Congress and other offices, supporting or opposing candidates based on their foreign policy stances and perceived impact on each nation’s national security interests, according to an ODNI official.
As Election Day looms, officials warn that the tactics deployed by foreign actors are likely to intensify, underscoring the importance of vigilance in the face of coordinated disinformation campaigns.
