US Launches Naval Blockade On Iran Shipping After Nuclear Talks Collapse

The United States has initiated a broad naval blockade targeting shipping linked to Iran, following the breakdown of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

According to US Central Command, the operation came into effect on April 13. It applies to vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports across the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Officials stated that enforcement would apply equally to ships of all nationalities. Traffic bound for non-Iranian destinations would still pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Commercial vessels must stay alert, follow official advisories, and maintain communication while navigating the region.

The escalation follows comments from US President Donald Trump, who confirmed that talks with Iran had failed to resolve disagreements over its nuclear activities. He indicated that while progress had been made on several fronts, the core issue remained unresolved.

Donald Trump also accused Iran of using threats linked to naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz to pressure global shipping. He described this as an unlawful tactic affecting international trade routes.

Iran strongly criticised the move. Seyed Abbas Araghchi said discussions had been close to a breakthrough. He further said they were disrupted by what he described as shifting demands and the imposition of a blockade.

Security analysts note that tensions have centred on Iran’s designation of parts of the strait as hazardous zones. This has forced some vessels to alter their routes.

Reports suggest that ships entering these areas have faced additional charges framed as protection fees. Many consider this practice inconsistent with international maritime law.

A limited number of naval mines are in use. Their presence has already affected global energy markets by pushing up oil prices and insurance costs.

In response, US naval forces have begun operations to secure shipping lanes and remove potential threats.

The US has deployed warships, including the USS Frank E Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, to patrol the area. They are supporting mine-clearing efforts.

Officials said they will communicate safer transit routes to commercial shipping soon.
