US Embassy Issues Advisory As Tensions Rise In Bangladesh

The US Embassy in Dhaka on Friday urged American citizens in Bangladesh to remain vigilant as violence escalated following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the radical Inqilab Mancha group.

The embassy warned that gatherings intended to be peaceful could quickly turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

Hadi died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore after battling for his life for six days.

Addressing the nation on Thursday night, interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed his death.

Citing media reports, the US Embassy said Hadi’s body would arrive in Dhaka on Friday evening, and that funeral prayers would likely take place on Saturday at Manik Mia Avenue in front of the National Parliament Building.

The embassy warned of extremely heavy traffic in the area and across Dhaka, adding that large spontaneous or planned gatherings were likely throughout Bangladesh. It advised US citizens to carefully review travel plans, allow additional time for delays, and avoid demonstrations.

“US citizens should practise vigilance and remember that gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” the advisory stated, urging caution near large crowds.

International Travel Advisories

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also issued a travel advisory, urging British nationals to avoid all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The advisory cited regular reports of violence and other criminal activity, particularly in remote areas.

The FCDO further noted that Bangladesh would observe a National Day of Mourning on Saturday, December 20, and advised travellers to closely monitor local information and follow official guidance amid the evolving situation.

Bangladesh has witnessed a sharp rise in violence and growing concerns over law and order under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Unrest has erupted in several parts of the country following Hadi’s death, heightening security concerns for residents and foreign nationals alike.

Authorities have remained on alert as funeral-related events and mourning observances are expected to draw large crowds.

Diplomatic missions have continued to monitor developments closely, reiterating the need for caution during this period of heightened tension.
