US Claims Unique Role In Facilitating Russia–Ukraine Peace Talks

The Washington has asserted that it remains the only country with the capacity to engage both Russia and Ukraine in meaningful discussions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington’s diplomatic standing allows it to communicate with both sides to assess whether a peaceful resolution is achievable.

According to Rubio, no other global actor currently holds the same level of access or influence with both Moscow and Kyiv. He underlined that this position places a significant responsibility on the US, particularly as the war shows no immediate signs of resolution through military means.

Rubio noted that the conflict in Ukraine has been a major priority for the US administration. He said President Donald Trump has devoted more time to discussions on the war than to any other international issue, including trade, reflecting the scale of American engagement.

Rubio added that Washington has sustained senior-level diplomatic efforts over an extended period, signalling its commitment to exploring pathways that could eventually lead to negotiations.

The Secretary of State stressed that the US is not attempting to force a peace deal on either party.

Instead, the US seeks to understand what each side requires, determine what compromises are possible, and identify any common ground for pursuing dialogue.

Negotiations Seen as the Only Viable Path

Rubio acknowledged that neither Russia nor Ukraine is likely to concede defeat in the near term. In his assessment, this reality makes a negotiated settlement the only viable route to ending the war, even though such an outcome would demand concessions from both sides.

Emphasising national sovereignty, Rubio made clear that any final agreement would be decided by Russia and Ukraine themselves. The US, he said, can facilitate discussions but will not dictate terms.

He also cautioned that diplomatic progress would be slow and largely conducted away from public view, requiring sustained effort rather than public announcements.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the war has reshaped European security, disrupted global energy markets and altered diplomatic alliances.

While Western nations continue to support Ukraine militarily and financially, Russia has strengthened ties with countries critical of US-led sanctions, further complicating prospects for peace.
