US‑Iran Tensions: Trump Says Tehran Is ‘Talking’ To Washington As Diplomacy And Military Signals Intensify

US President Donald Trump has said Iran is negotiating with the United States, suggesting that diplomatic engagement could avert conflict even as tensions escalate.

“The plan is that they’re talking to us, and we’ll see if we can do something,” Trump told a Fox News correspondent, without outlining any specific terms.

Trump also reiterated that Washington cannot disclose military plans to Gulf allies while negotiations are underway, citing operational secrecy.

A senior Iranian security official, Ali Larijani, said the formation of a structure for talks with the US is progressing, though details remain sparse. Larijani’s remarks came after regional diplomatic contacts and underscore Tehran’s cautious engagement with Washington.

The developments follow broader regional tensions, including reported live‑fire naval exercises near US warships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has also highlighted a significant US military presence moving toward the region, including a fleet larger than that previously deployed to Venezuela, a signal of pressure on Iran to negotiate.

While the diplomatic talk is ongoing, the backdrop remains fraught: Iran has previously emphasised it will not discuss its defence capabilities under duress, and domestic protests and geopolitical strains add complexity to any potential deal.

Analysts note that Washington’s mix of negotiation overtures and military signalling reflects a dual‑track strategy aimed at averting broader conflict while keeping pressure on Tehran to engage substantively.
