US President Donald Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to strike a deal to end the ongoing Ukraine war “now” or face steep tariffs and harsher sanctions.
“If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the US and other participating countries,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He emphasized that he does not intend to harm Russia but wants to help end the conflict. “Russia’s economy is failing. I’m doing President Putin a big favor. Settle now and stop this ridiculous war. It’s only going to get worse,” Trump stated.
Trump’s tone shifted sharply from his remarks at a Tuesday press conference, where he indicated that further sanctions “sound likely” if Putin refuses to negotiate. He also avoided confirming whether he would continue former President Joe Biden’s military aid policy to Ukraine.
“We’re looking at that,” Trump said, adding that discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin would occur “very soon.”
In critical comments earlier this week, Trump accused Putin of “destroying Russia by not making a deal.” He reiterated his intent to end the war swiftly and claimed Zelensky had expressed interest in a peace agreement.
Trump also suggested the conflict would not have started under his leadership. “Let’s get this war over with. No more lives should be lost,” he urged. A call between Trump and Putin is expected “very soon,” raising hopes for potential progress.
