US President Donald Trump is set to undertake a three-day official visit to Japan from 27 to 29 October.
During his stay, President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will hold a Japan–US summit meeting. This will mark Takaichi’s first official engagement with Trump since assuming office.
As part of his visit, Donald Trump will have an audience with the Emperor of Japan.
“President Trump’s visit to Japan is an extremely meaningful opportunity to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance, and the Government of Japan wholeheartedly welcomes President Trump’s visit to Japan,” asserted Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
This will be President Trump’s fourth visit to Japan in office, following his previous trip during his first term in 2019.
In September, Japan’s then-Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba attended a reception hosted by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
Ishiba expressed his appreciation for Trump’s friendship and confidence. He emphasised the enduring importance of the Japan–US alliance. According to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry, the alliance plays a vital role in promoting global peace and prosperity.
Both leaders welcomed the continuing positive momentum in bilateral relations, which they said served the interests of both nations.
Earlier in February, President Trump and Ishiba held their first official talks in Washington. During the meeting, they reaffirmed their shared goals for the partnership. Both leaders expressed their commitment to fostering a ‘new golden age’ in US–Japan relations.
The leaders pledged to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. They also committed to working towards peace and stability in an increasingly turbulent world, as outlined in their joint communiqué.
“The two leaders expressed their shared desire for bilateral security and defence cooperation under the US-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security to grow stronger than ever, and emphasised that the US-Japan Alliance remains the cornerstone of peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Japan reiterated its unwavering commitment to fundamentally reinforce its own defence capabilities, which the United States welcomed,” the statement further noted.
