Trump Says Putin And Zelensky Seek Deal As Ukraine Conflict Remains Complex

US President Donald Trump has described the Ukraine-Russia conflict as complex, asserting that it is Biden’s war and emphasising that the main obstacles to a peace deal remain disputes over territory and boundaries.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from Davos to Washington, Trump said both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appear willing to reach an agreement.

“I think that President Putin would like to make a deal. I think that President Zelensky would like to make a deal,” he stated, while stopping short of predicting a breakthrough.

Trump criticised the ongoing nature of the conflict, comparing it to other disputes he claimed to have resolved quickly. He also highlighted the severe winter conditions inside Ukraine, noting that many citizens live without heat in extreme cold.

International Affairs: Greenland, Venezuela, and Iran

Trump addressed several international issues during the briefing. On Greenland, he said the administration is working towards a framework arrangement and expects clarity within two weeks.

Regarding Venezuela, he praised strong leadership and outlined oil shipments to the United States, claiming the deal would benefit both nations.

Discussing Iran, Trump noted significant US military deployments while expressing a preference to avoid conflict.

He claimed to have intervened to prevent mass executions, stating, “I stopped 837 hangings on Thursday.” He also referenced past US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, describing them as a total obliteration.

Trump touched on domestic policy, expressing scepticism about allowing withdrawals from retirement accounts for home purchases, citing strong performance in retirement funds.

He also suggested he could remain involved in peace efforts beyond his current term, referring to a potential role on a Board of Peace in collaboration with the United Nations.

Throughout his remarks, Trump emphasised the complexity of international conflicts and highlighted the role of US military strength, asserting that we have a great military and a rapid pace of defence production.
