Trump Pushes To Expand ‘Board Of Peace’ Beyond Gaza; Position It Above UN

US President Donald Trump is advancing his Board of Peace (BoP) as a supervisory global mechanism above the United Nations.

He intends to widen its authority beyond Gaza, where it initially focused on ceasefire enforcement and reconstruction.

At the group’s inaugural meeting on Thursday, Trump declared that the BoP would monitor the United Nations and ensure it operates efficiently.

He argued that, after stabilising Gaza, the body could extend its remit to additional crises.

“We can do numerous other things,” he stated. He added that the BoP could act broadly, in partnership with the UN.

The Security Council previously endorsed the BoP’s limited Gaza mandate. Trump nonetheless signalled larger ambitions.

He reiterated his longstanding criticism that the UN has not fulfilled its potential. Yet he simultaneously described the institution as possessing immense promise and capable officials.

He pledged support to reinforce its viability.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres responded cautiously. His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, avoided direct rebuttal.

He affirmed that the UN Charter remains the organisation’s guiding framework.

Member States supervise their work through the General Assembly and the Security Council.

He delivered the clarification during a press briefing after reporters referenced Trump’s remarks.

Structural paralysis persists within the Security Council. The veto authority of its five permanent members, including the United States, restricts decisive intervention.

Trump, by contrast, has frequently applied American economic and military leverage to shape diplomacy unilaterally.

Financial distress compounds institutional strain. Washington owes approximately $4 billion in assessed contributions.

Officials caution that the UN could exhaust funds by mid-year without payment. Trump promised monetary assistance and vowed to ensure institutional durability.

However, he stopped short of confirming immediate disbursement of approved dues.

Trump framed his assurances through a legacy perspective. He suggested that the UN would outlast his presidency and could eventually realise its full capacity.

He confirmed plans to speak with Guterres, who is attending the AI Impact Summit in India, hosted alongside PM Modi.

Dujarric indicated that a call was expected, though none had occurred by Thursday evening.

Trump described Guterres as a capable leader but revisited grievances about malfunctioning facilities during his prior General Assembly address.

He nonetheless pledged to improve the UN’s infrastructure.
