‘State Of Border Determines State Of Relationship’: S Jaishankar On India-China Ties

India-China relations have recovered from the severe strain caused by the prolonged border stand-off, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in New York. He stressed that the frontier will remain central to any further normalisation.

Jaishankar said bilateral ties are better than in 2025 and significantly improved from 2024. He described the change as a recovery from the sharp deterioration that followed the 2020 border crisis, rather than a structural transformation.

The stand-off disrupted official exchanges, visas and flights, though trade continued. As tensions eased, some suspended channels resumed.

Jaishankar said this reflected stabilisation, not the resolution of underlying differences.

India has maintained that a prolonged breakdown benefits neither side.

Jaishankar said a downturn in relations could create opportunities for third parties. He said India preferred practical solutions that served its own interests.

“If I can find a solution that works for me, I would rather do that,” he said.

The Minister underlined the central principle: “The state of the border determines the state of the relationship.”

Jaishankar added that normal relations cannot coexist with continuing border tension. He said improved ties strengthen India’s position with China and other major partners, including the United States, Europe, Japan and Russia.

India seeks balance across these relationships without excessive dependence on any single country.

India and China share a disputed frontier. The deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020 sharply affected bilateral ties.

Trade has continued despite political and security differences. India has linked fuller ties to peace and stability along the border.
