Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry has responded to the recent India-Canada diplomatic dispute, accusing Canada of providing a safe haven for terrorists without concrete evidence. Sabry criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for making what he called “outrageous and unsubstantiated allegations,” drawing parallels to Trudeau’s past comments regarding Sri Lanka, specifically denying allegations of genocide in the country.
The diplomatic tension between India and Canada escalated when Trudeau suggested India’s involvement in the fatal shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, in Canada. India rejected these allegations as baseless.
Sabry also criticized Trudeau for honoring a former Nazi soldier in the Canadian Parliament, which he found questionable. He argued that such actions by Trudeau further fueled concerns about his unsubstantiated claims.
Furthermore, Sabry highlighted the impact of Trudeau’s “genocide” comment on Sri Lanka-Canada relations, emphasizing the contradiction between Trudeau’s political statements and the stance of the Canadian Ministry of Global Affairs, which contradicted his claims about Sri Lanka.
Sabry called on the Canadian Prime Minister not to interfere in the internal matters of sovereign countries and stressed the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and the Indian Ocean identity for peaceful coexistence.
Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry criticized Trudeau’s statements for fostering disharmony and hatred in both Canada and Sri Lanka, rather than promoting peace and reconciliation.
