Authorities confirmed at least seven people died and four others injured in a fire in a Spanish nightclub on Sunday morning.
According to the city’s town hall, search and rescue operations were still underway at the club.
Rescuers were able to enter the building after being warned at 6:00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) that a fire had broken out in the nightclub, as per the emergency services statement posted on social media.
They finally got in around 0800 GMT and discovered four bodies, followed by two more forty minutes later.
The Murcia municipal council acknowledged the death toll had increased to seven an hour later.
As seen in emergency services images, the fire started in the ‘Teatre’ nightclub, also known as ‘Fonda Milagros. Water hoses from fire vehicles were still blasting the club’s blackened exterior in the photographs.
Thick smoke could be observed pouring from the building’s roof.
“Emergency services are still hard at work to put out the fire that occurred in the Teatre nightclub”, said the city’s town hall, adding it deeply regrets the accident and extends condolences to all impacted.
Two ladies, aged 22 and 25, and two males, both in their forties, were also injured as a result of smoke inhalation.
Murcia Mayor Jose Ballesta declared three days of mourning.
He stated that about 40 firefighters and 12 emergency vehicles were on the site.
