A fire erupted on Friday afternoon at a car parts plant in Daejeon, South Korea, injuring at least 50 people, including 35 critically.
The National Fire Agency immediately issued a national firefighting mobilisation, indicating that the blaze had surpassed the local firefighting capacity.
South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok instructed the interior ministry and fire authorities to deploy all available personnel and equipment to rescue workers and extinguish the fire.
The Daejeon metropolitan government and police implemented traffic control and evacuation measures to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
Firefighters battled the flames throughout the afternoon, rescuing injured employees and transporting them to nearby hospitals.
Authorities confirmed that emergency teams prioritised workers trapped inside the facility, while medical personnel treated serious burn and smoke inhalation cases on site. This fire follows a series of industrial and building incidents in South Korea. On March 14, a seven-story building in Seoul caught fire, leaving ten people injured.
Earlier, on February 10, an oil tank exploded at a storage facility in Gyeongsan, prompting an emergency response, though no casualties occurred.
Investigators are actively examining the Daejeon plant fire to determine its cause, inspecting the facility and reviewing safety protocols.
Rescue operations and medical care continue, as authorities seek to stabilise the situation and prevent further harm.
The Daejeon fire has raised concerns over industrial safety standards and emergency preparedness across the country, prompting calls for stricter regulations and faster response measures.
Officials emphasised the need for enhanced safety protocols to protect workers and limit potential damage from future industrial accidents.
