Severe storms hit Ukraine, resulting in 10 deaths and 2500 rescues

On Tuesday, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that ten people were killed in snowstorms in Ukraine, after icy winds and storms devastated the country since Sunday, cutting power and paralyzing roads.

Southern Ukraine suffered the worst, particularly the Black Sea region of Odesa. Cars and buses went off icy roads into fields and police had to battle fierce gusts to tow them out.

In a telegram post, Klymenko wrote, “As a result of worsening weather conditions, 10 people died in Odesa, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kyiv regions”.

“Twenty-three people were injured, including two children”, Klymenko explained.

Klymenko went on to say, “A total of 411 settlements in 11 regions had lost power, and more than 1,500 vehicles had to be rescued”.

The governor of the Odesa region, Oleh Kiper, said about 2,500 people had been rescued after becoming stuck in the snow.

“849 vehicles have been towed out, including 24 buses and 17 ambulances”, Kiper posted on the Telegram app, adding that power was off in over 300 communities in his region.
