S Jaishankar Inaugurates Scoreboard At Sabina Park With PM Andrew Holness In Jamaica

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined Jamaican PM Andrew Holness in Kingston to inaugurate a new electronic scoreboard at Sabina Park, a landmark cricket venue. The scoreboard, presented by India, was described as a gesture reflecting deepening friendship and shared cultural links between the two countries.

In a message shared online, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of cricket in India–Jamaica relations, noting that the sport has long connected the two nations through mutual respect and camaraderie. He expressed hope that the new facility would witness many memorable performances and further strengthen bilateral ties.

The Minister also acknowledged the absence of Jamaican cricket legend Chris Gayle during the ceremony.

During his visit, Jaishankar engaged with members of the Indian community in Jamaica, discussing their contributions and the evolving partnership between the two nations. He outlined India’s recent progress in infrastructure, technology, and governance, emphasising opportunities for closer cooperation.

The Minister also travelled to Old Harbour, recognised as the site where the first Indian indentured labourers arrived in Jamaica more than 180 years ago. He met community members who continue to preserve Indian traditions and heritage, and thanked Jamaican ministers Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange and Edmund Bartlett for their presence.

Jaishankar’s Caribbean tour will continue with visits to Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, these nations share historical connections with India through the descendants of ‘Girmitiya’ labourers, Indians who migrated under colonial-era contracts in the 19th century and later settled in the region.
