Russia Claims To Have Shot Down 2 Ukrainian Drones Following Man Killed Near Border

On Sunday, Russia said it shot down two Ukrainian drones flying over border territories after the Governor of Belgorod region alleged an explosive-laden drone had murdered a civilian.

Since Kyiv announced in July that it intended to return the conflict to Russian soil, Russia and the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula have been battered by a series of strikes in the last month.

Moscow’s defence ministry stated, “(During) the night and morning hours… Two unmanned aerial vehicles were detected and destroyed in flight over the territory of the Bryansk and Kursk regions”.

According to the Governor of Russia’s Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, a drone crashed into an apartment building in Kursk city overnight, knocking out windows on many stories.

It was unclear whether this was one of the drones shot down earlier by the defence ministry.

On social media, Governor Roman Starovoit wrote, “There were no fires, none of the residents were injured”.

The strike occurred a day after the Governor of Russia’s neighboring Belgorod region announced that a drone attack killed a man in the village of Shchetinovka, which is less than one mile (about two kilometres) from the Ukrainian border.

“The Ukrainian armed forces dropped an explosive device from a drone when the man was on his dacha plot cutting grass”, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said Saturday evening, revealing the man died from shrapnel wounds.

Russian border regions have often accused Kyiv’s military forces of indiscriminate shelling and cross-border incursions by Ukrainian-backed insurgents.

Individual attacks on Russian soil are not claimed by Ukraine, which blames the invasions on partisan groups hostile to President Vladimir Putin.
