Putin, Trump Hold 90-Minute Call On Iran, Ukraine And Global Security

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held an extended telephone conversation focusing on recent security concerns, tensions in the Middle East, and developments in Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.

The discussion, which lasted over 90 minutes, included reference to a reported shooting incident at a White House Correspondents’ event.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin condemned the attack and reiterated opposition to any form of politically driven violence.

A significant portion of the call centred on Iran and the wider Persian Gulf region.

Putin expressed support for Trump’s decision to prolong a ceasefire, describing it as a stabilising step. He also warned that renewed military action by the United States and Israel could have severe consequences not only for Iran and neighbouring countries but for global stability.

Moscow, Ushakov said, continues to advocate a diplomatic resolution to disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Russia plans to remain engaged with Iranian officials, Gulf nations, Israel and US negotiators in an effort to ease tensions.

On Ukraine, both leaders were said to share similar views regarding the actions of the government led by Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Kremlin claimed Kyiv is prolonging the conflict with backing from European countries, an allegation not independently verified.

Putin also accused Ukrainian forces of targeting civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory. He stated that Russia has returned more than 20,000 bodies to Ukraine, while receiving just over 500 in return since early 2025.

At Trump’s request, Putin provided an update on battlefield conditions, asserting that Russian forces currently hold the advantage along the front line.

The Russian President additionally signalled readiness to introduce a temporary ceasefire during upcoming Victory Day commemorations, a proposal Trump reportedly supported, noting the shared historical significance of the occasion.

While reaffirming that Vladimir Putin intends to achieve its military objectives, he indicated that negotiations remain preferable. He added that this would depend on Ukraine responding constructively to existing proposals.

Trump, for his part, emphasised the urgency of ending hostilities and expressed willingness to assist in mediation efforts.

According to Ushakov, US representatives will continue engaging with both Moscow and Kyiv.

Beyond security issues, the two presidents also touched on the potential for expanded cooperation in economic and energy sectors. Both sides agreed to maintain ongoing communication through direct and diplomatic channels.
