Putin Set To Visit India In Late August For Annual Summit With PM Modi

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India at the end of August, according to a report by Russia’s Interfax news agency.

The confirmation came through comments made by India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval during his ongoing visit to Moscow.

“We have now established very good relations, which we value very much, and a strategic partnership between our countries. We interact at a high level. We were pleased to learn about President Putin’s visit to our country, scheduled for late August,” Doval said during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.

Annual Bilateral Summit on the Agenda

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov had earlier confirmed Putin’s planned visit following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip will form part of the regular annual meetings between the leaders of both nations.

“Our leaders have an agreement to meet once a year. This time, it is our turn,” Ushakov noted during a press briefing.

The last time Putin visited India was in December 2021 during the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi.

PM Modi made two high-profile visits to Russia last year — attending the 22nd India-Russia Summit in July and the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October.

Strategic Ties and Diplomatic Support

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also confirmed ongoing preparations for the visit, citing the ‘dynamic’ political dialogue and strategic convergence between Moscow and New Delhi in the evolving multipolar world order.

Lavrov emphasised, “Relations between our countries have a long history. They have stood the test of time.” He highlighted that the cooperation is based on mutual respect and consideration of each other’s interests.

Putin had accepted PM Modi’s invitation to visit India with gratitude. Their strategic dialogue also extended to direct expressions of solidarity.

In May, the Russian President called PM Modi to condemn the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. He offered full support in India’s fight against terrorism.

In June, he conveyed condolences over the Ahmedabad plane crash, sending sympathies to the families affected and wishes for the injured.

The Putin visit to India continues the tradition of strong ties, underscoring the privileged strategic partnership between the two nations.
