President Trump, Xi Seek New Chapter In US-China Relations At White House Dinner

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a conciliatory tone at a White House state dinner, highlighting dialogue, stability and future cooperation.

Xi said his talks with Trump had produced a common understanding on many issues and added new substance and strategic guidance to US-China relations. He, however, did not specify the issues or announce a detailed agreement.

The dinner brought together senior officials, business leaders and technology executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Elon Musk and AMD CEO Lisa Su.

Trump presented Xi with a bald eagle statue, calling the bird a national symbol of the United States and expressing hope that the gift would have a prominent place in Beijing.

In his toast, Trump acknowledged differences between the two political systems but stressed the enduring ties between the American and Chinese peoples. He said stronger relations could promote prosperity and security for future generations.

Xi thanked Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for their hospitality and referred to the reciprocal visits made by the two leaders within six months. He said the national ambitions of the US and China could support each other, citing Trump’s Make America Great Again agenda and China’s pursuit of great national rejuvenation.

Xi urged both countries to act responsibly and explore new avenues for cooperation.

The dinner followed talks on trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence during Xi’s three-day US visit, his first to Washington in more than a decade.

Xi recalled US-China cooperation during World War II and ping-pong diplomacy, while calling for a new chapter in bilateral ties. Trump toasted harmony, peace and success.
