President Trump Signs Executive Order To Boost AI Development, Cybersecurity

US President Donald Trump has introduced a new executive order designed to accelerate artificial intelligence development while reinforcing the country’s cybersecurity capabilities.

The administration said the policy aims to safeguard government networks, critical infrastructure, and national security systems from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

White House officials stated that the initiative seeks to strengthen America’s position in the global AI sector while improving protection against digital attacks across both public and private organisations.

The executive order instructs government departments to broaden the use of artificial intelligence tools to identify and counter cyber threats more effectively.

The Department of Homeland Security, working alongside other federal agencies, will lead efforts to improve cyber defence measures and expand access to advanced security technologies.

The programme will support federal institutions as well as state and local authorities and operators of essential services, including hospitals, community financial institutions, and utility providers.

As part of the initiative, the administration will create an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse to encourage cooperation between technology companies and critical infrastructure operators.

The platform will help participants detect software weaknesses, coordinate responses to emerging threats, and speed up the release of security updates.

Officials believe the initiative will strengthen collaboration and improve the country’s ability to respond to cyber risks.

Oversight of Advanced AI Models

The order introduces a classified evaluation process for advanced artificial intelligence models with significant cyber capabilities. This system will help authorities identify so-called frontier AI models and establish channels for voluntary cooperation between developers and government agencies.

According to the administration, selected government partners may receive early access to advanced AI technologies to support cybersecurity planning and risk assessment.

The order also clarifies that it does not create mandatory licensing or approval requirements for AI developers.

The executive order directs the Attorney General to give greater priority to cases involving the misuse of artificial intelligence for criminal purposes, including unauthorised access to computer systems, theft of sensitive information, and other cyber offences.

The announcement generated mixed reactions in Washington.

Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner argued that several elements of the policy closely resemble proposals previously advanced by Congress and earlier administrations. He expressed support for provisions related to voluntary testing of advanced AI systems and expanded information-sharing on software vulnerabilities, describing them as constructive measures for improving cybersecurity.
