President Trump Signals Possible Russia Sanctions Relief; Rules Out Iran Nuclear Weapons

US President Donald Trump said the United States could consider sanctions relief for Russia as part of efforts to end the Ukraine war, while also expressing dissatisfaction with Iran’s nuclear negotiations and reiterating that Tehran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

Speaking to reporters before departing on Marine One, Trump said he would like to see the war brought to a close and indicated that sanctions relief was a possibility.

He noted that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and stressed the urgency of reaching agreements with both Russia and Ukraine, adding that negotiations appeared close but remained uncertain.

Highlighting the human cost of the conflict, Trump said 25,000 people died last month, calling the war a tragedy and a shame.

On Iran, Trump said talks were not progressing as Washington had expected and expressed unhappiness over Tehran’s negotiating stance.

He said no final decision exists, made clear that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and said the talks could go either way.

Asked whether military action could spiral into a prolonged Middle East conflict, Trump acknowledged inherent risks in war but underscored the strength of the US military, saying he would prefer not to use it, but sometimes it becomes necessary.

Turning to Cuba, he described the island nation as being in severe economic distress and said discussions were underway. He claimed Cuba faces shortages of money, oil and food, and suggested the possibility of a friendly takeover.

On domestic economic matters, Trump pointed to rapidly easing mortgage rates and advised young homebuyers to save and wait for lower borrowing costs. He also dismissed reports that he was considering a national emergency linked to the upcoming midterm elections.

Diplomatic Context

The remarks come amid continued fighting in Ukraine and renewed diplomatic manoeuvring between Moscow and Western capitals.

Since 2022, US sanctions have targeted Russia’s energy exports, financial institutions and defence sector.

Any shift in policy could carry implications for countries such as India, which has increased imports of discounted Russian crude while strengthening ties with Washington.

Developments in Iran’s nuclear talks also hold significance for regional stability and global energy markets.
