President Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire While Maintaining Naval Blockade

US President Donald Trump has decided to extend the temporary ceasefire with Iran while keeping a naval blockade in place, insisting Tehran must first present a cohesive negotiating position before diplomacy can advance.

In a message shared on Truth Social, Trump said the move followed outreach from Pakistan and what he described as divisions within Iran’s leadership. He noted that US military operations would remain paused for now, though maritime restrictions would continue until Iran submits a consolidated proposal.

The announcement came just before the original two-week truce was due to end, creating fresh uncertainty over planned negotiations.

Shortly afterwards, JD Vance cancelled a scheduled visit to Islamabad, where the next round of discussions had been likely to take place.

US officials indicated Washington would wait for clearer signals from Tehran before proceeding.

Iran has yet to confirm its participation in further talks and has demanded the lifting of the blockade as a precondition for engagement.

Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister, criticised Washington’s actions, arguing that restricting Iranian ports breaches the ceasefire and escalates tensions.

Islamabad, acting as a mediator, welcomed the extension.

PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed appreciation for the decision, stating it would allow diplomatic efforts more time to progress.

Despite the pause in direct hostilities, the situation remains volatile.

Trump reiterated that military options remain available if negotiations fail, signalling that the current restraint could be temporary.

The United States continues to enforce a wide-ranging maritime blockade targeting Iranian shipping and oil exports. Multiple vessels have reportedly been turned back since the measures began in mid-April.

In response, Tehran has issued warnings of potential escalation. These include threats linked to the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is a vital corridor for global energy supplies.

The standoff, ongoing since late February, has already unsettled energy markets. Both sides remain effectively in limbo. They are bound by a ceasefire, yet without a clear route towards resolution.
