President Droupadi Murmu met the President of the Portuguese Parliament, Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco, in Lisbon on Tuesday as part of her ongoing State Visit to Portugal.
The two leaders discussed key India-Portugal bilateral relations and international matters.
They agreed that regular parliamentary exchanges would enhance people-to-people ties between the two nations.
President Murmu was warmly welcomed at the Assembleia Da Republica with a ceremonial Guard of Honor.
She held talks with Aguiar-Branco and interacted with Members of Parliament, including the India-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group.
On Monday evening, President Murmu received the ‘City Key of Honor’ from the Mayor of Lisbon.
Thanking the city, she praised Lisbon’s open-minded culture and its leadership in innovation, digital transition, and technology—areas where India seeks closer cooperation with Portugal.
Later that evening, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa hosted a banquet in her honor at Palacio da Ajuda.
Speaking at the event, President Murmu highlighted the deep cultural ties between India and Portugal, rooted in a shared past reflected in architecture, language, and cuisine.
She noted that 2024 marks 50 years of India-Portugal bilateral relations.
With growing cooperation in science, technology, defence, IT, start-ups, education, and culture, she called the partnership “dynamic and visionary.”
President Murmu also appreciated Portugal’s support for India-EU ties. She recalled the first India-EU Summit in 2000 and the historic India-EU+27 Leadership Summit in 2021—both held during Portugal’s EU Presidency.
Expressing optimism, she said India and Portugal will continue to deepen their ties for mutual and global benefit.
