Prime Minister Narendra Modi received high praise from Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who called him a “champion among leaders” for his impactful leadership. President Ali highlighted Modi’s governance style and its influence on the developing world during a meeting in Georgetown.
PM Modi, the first Indian leader to visit Guyana in 56 years, was welcomed by President Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and cabinet ministers. During the visit, Modi and Ali planted a sapling under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. Modi also met Grenada’s PM Dickon Mitchell and Barbados PM Mia Amor Mottley.
Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception and said, “I am confident this visit will deepen the friendship between our nations.” He received the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown’ in recognition of India-Guyana relations.
Modi held discussions with President Ali, resulting in agreements on agriculture and technology transfer. Highlighting India’s contribution to Guyana’s defence, Modi noted the supply of two Dornier aircraft and pledged scholarships and training for Guyanese soldiers. He called President Ali a “huge brand ambassador” of the Indian community.
The visit coincided with the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, where Modi met Caribbean leaders. President Ali emphasized India’s growing ties with the region, built on shared values and mutual progress. Modi reflected on his personal connection with Guyana, noting his visit 24 years ago.
India has committed to initiatives in renewable energy and climate change, including a $150 million credit line for CARICOM countries. President Ali hailed the visit as a significant milestone in deepening India-Guyana relations.
