Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York on Tuesday evening, said he saw a bright future for India.
Mr. Tyson, an author and science communicator, read a quotation from his book “Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier” to PM Modi.
“For me, the sky is not the limit”, Tyson stated as he showed PM Modi his book, to which the latter responded with a “wah!” as the two laughed and posed for photographers.
Neil deGrasse Tyson later stated, “I’m quite sure I’m not alone when I say the potential for what India can accomplish knows no limits”, following his meeting with Prime Minister Modi.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Talked space, science, and related issues with @neiltyson Highlighted steps India is taking to reform the space sector and draw more youngsters towards science as well as innovation”, through his official Twitter handle.
Mr. Tyson said he was delighted to spend time in the company of a head of state who is as scientifically thoughtful as Prime Minister Modi.
Mr. Tyson and PM Modi also discussed science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“There are so many world leaders that I believe their priorities are out of balance with what it needs to be going into the twenty-first century”, Tyson remarked.
“With all of civilization’s challenges, the solutions will come from advances in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. And it’s obvious to me that he (PM Modi) is concerned about all of this”, added the US astronomer.
The science communicator also stated that PM Modi reserved his conversations about space until the next occasion, but he is confident that space is important to the Indian prime minister.
American astrophysicist went on to say, “Obviously, he reserved his conversations about space for me, and I guess Elon (musk) was here a few minutes before I got here. But it’s clear that space matters quite a bit to the Prime Minister, so I was delighted to hear about future programs that he has in mind. I’m quite sure I’m not alone when I say the potential for what India can accomplish knows no limits”.
Prime Minister Modi, who is on his first state visit to the United States, has met with a number of high-profile individuals, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, author Nicholas Nassim Taleb, and investor Ray Dalio, among others.
