PM Narendra Modi Arrives In Oslo For India-Nordic Summit, Norway Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Oslo on Monday as part of the fourth leg of his ongoing five-nation tour.

In a notable diplomatic gesture, PM Modi was personally received at the airport by Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store.

Among those present to welcome him were Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, and India’s Ambassador to Norway Gloria Gangte, along with other senior officials.

This trip represents PM Modi’s first official visit to Norway and also marks the first time in more than 40 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited the country. He arrived in Oslo after completing his engagements in Sweden, continuing his broader international outreach.

During his stay, the Prime Minister will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit and hold discussions to boost cooperation between India and the Nordic nations.

The meetings will focus on shared priorities such as innovation, sustainability and economic growth.

Key Meetings on PM Modi’s Agenda

As part of his itinerary, PM Modi will meet Harald V and Queen Sonja. He will also hold comprehensive bilateral talks with PM Jonas Gahr Store to review ongoing cooperation and explore new opportunities.

Additionally, both leaders will jointly address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit and highlight opportunities for deeper collaboration in emerging sectors.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised, “The visit will provide an opportunity to review the progress made in India-Norway relations and explore avenues to further strengthen them, with a focus on trade and investment, capitalising on the India – EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, as well as on clean and green tech and blue economy.”

“The visit will also be an opportunity to induce momentum in bilateral trade worth around USD 2.73 billion (2024), and investments by Norway’s Government Pension Fund (GPFG) of close to USD 28 billion in the Indian capital market,” it added.

India and Norway formalised diplomatic ties in 1947, with Norway being among the earliest countries to recognise India.

Since then, both nations have maintained warm and cooperative relations based on democratic principles, diversity, gender equality, human rights and the rule of law.

The visit will further reinforce the partnership between India and Norway across strategic and economic domains.

With growing emphasis on sustainability and innovation, both countries are likely to expand cooperation in the years ahead.
